Urinary Incontinence

A loss of bladder control, otherwise known as urinary incontinence, is a common condition among both men and women. Many life events can cause urinary incontinence, including the aging process, childbirth, injury, and surgery. At Advanced Urology, our goal is to help you regain control over your bladder while treating you with the respect you expect.

Diagnosis

In order to treat your urinary incontinence, we must first find out what is causing you to have bladder control problems. Your family and medical history will be studied to determine the cause. Once we find the cause, we will choose the least invasive treatment option possible.

Potential Treatments

If your urinary incontinence is caused by weak muscles in your pelvic floor, we will teach you how to do pelvic floor exercises. These will strengthen the muscles so that you can maintain bladder control. Once you have learned to do the exercises correctly, you can perform them in the comfort of your own home.

Sometimes the condition is caused by overactive muscles in the bladder. Overactive bladder can be treated with medication. If your condition is caused by an infection, antibiotics will help. We also sometimes prescribe a medication that will both calm the bladder muscles and contract the muscles at the bladder neck.

If medication is not working and you do not have weak pelvic muscles, we may work with you to learn bladder training methods. These will allow you to teach your body to postpone urination when you first feel the need to go. Sometimes bladder training is all that is needed to control incontinence.

Some patients, especially women who have had children, these non-invasive treatments will not be successful. In these situations, surgery may be required. We offer several surgical procedures that can treat urinary incontinence, and we will look at your physiology and the cause of your condition before choosing a surgery. If you are facing the embarrassment of urinary incontinence, call Advanced Urology today for an initial consultation. We can help!
