At Advanced Urology, we are pleased to offer our patients HIFU, one of the most innovative and least invasive treatment options for prostate conditions. HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, and it is a modern technique used to treat prostate cancer and BPH with a reduced risk of side effects and a high rate of success. HIFU uses high intensity focused ultrasound waves to completely destroy the prostate. This, in turn, destroys the prostate cancer. If the cancer is found early enough, HIFU is almost always an effective treatment option.
Unprecedented Control
The treatment device used during a HIFU procedure also captures images of the prostate gland during the procedure. This gives the physician precise control over the delivery of the treatment. This is what protects the surrounding tissues from damage normally associated with prostate treatments. The incidence of common side effects, such as impotence and incontinence, is greatly reduced with this high level of control.
Short Treatment and Recovery Times
Prostate treatment with HIFU does not take long. Most treatments can be completed in less than three hours. General anesthesia is not needed for this outpatient procedure. Most patients are able to return to their normal lifestyles within a few days of treatment.
HIFU requires no hospital stay and few incisions. Because it is not a surgery, the risk of blood loss is lowered tremendously. Patients experience only mild pain from HIFU, compared to the tremendous amount of pain associated with prostate surgery.
Other Benefits of HIFU
Because HIFU involves no radiation, it can be used as a salvage treatment if other prostate cancer treatments have failed. It can also be repeated if needed. Since the procedure destroys the prostate gland completely, it usually eliminates the cancer in cases that are caught before the cancer spreads into the body.
