At Advanced Urology, our goal is to provide our patients with treatment options that not only preserve their lives, but also the quality of those lives. We recognize that common side effects of prostate cancer treatments, such as impotence and incontinence, can greatly lower an individuals quality of life. As such, we have chosen to offer HIFU as one of our prostate cancer treatment options. HIFU offers prostate cancer patients a variety of benefits, including reduced side effects, shorter recovery times, and greater success rates.
Benefits of the HIFU Procedure
Treating prostate cancer and BPH using HIFU carries many benefits, including the following:
- Destroying the entire prostate gland and the cancer it contains
- No radiation
- No hospitalization
- Spinal anesthesia, not general anesthesia
- One treatment is generally sufficient
- Can be used as a salvage treatment
- Can be followed by other treatments
- Short treatment time
- Non-surgical prostate cancer treatment option
- Limited blood loss and pain
With these benefits, it is no wonder that many patients are choosing to treat their prostate cancer using HIFU.
The Sonablate 500
The Sonablate 500 is a HIFU treatment device that offers physicians a new level of control. With the Sonablate 500, physicians use a specially designed transducer to both capture images of the prostate and also deliver the treatment. This allows the procedure to be performed without a TURP procedure beforehand.
The images captured by the Sonablate 500 are real-time images. The physician can literally see the prostate being destroyed as it occurs. This allows the surgeon to tailor the treatment to the patients needs as it progresses. Quick adjustments can be made when needed to destroy the prostate gland while protecting surrounding tissue.
While HIFU is a highly successful prostate cancer treatment option, not all patients qualify for HIFU. To find out if your prostate cancer case qualifies, visit our qualifications page, or schedule an appointment with Advanced Urology for an initial consultation.
